Thanks to the generous support of the Hector Foundation, the Prinzhorn Collection has been expanded to include further important works. A self-portrait by Elfriede Lohse-Wächtler from around 1929 has been acquired and is now one of the main pieces in our collection by this artist. Also new to the collection is a bundle of paintings and prints by Friedrich Schröder-Sonnenstern, who is considered an important artist in the field of art by psychiatric patients after the Second World War.

Elfriede Lohse-Wächtler (1899-1940) has been represented in the collection with her estate since 2021.  She is known for her empathetic and vivid portraits, especially her unsparing self-portraits. With the acquisition of this chalk drawing from her main creative phase around 1929, the museum was able to secure the last self-portrait of the artist available on the art market for the Prinzhorn Collection.

Friedrich Schröder-Sonnenstern (1892-1982) is considered an important representative of Art brut or Outsider Art. He was discovered by surrealists in the 1950s. The acquired bundle comes from the Hartmut Kraft Collection and includes numerous early coloured pencil drawings as well as various versions of the motif "The Donkey Driver" from the 1950s to 1970s. This series of pictures provides a unique insight into the artist's development. All of the works were already on display at the museum in 2020 in the exhibition "Border crosser between art and psychiatry - works from the Kraft Collection".
