Madness! In 2026, the Prinzhorn Collection at Heidelberg University Hospital will celebrate its 25th anniversary. The anniversary exhibition ‘Is It All Art?’ focuses on a question that has accompanied the museum since its foundation: How can works of visual art from a psychiatric context be exhibited, many of which were never originally intended for the public or were not created as art?

The Prinzhorn Collection – From “Art of the Insane” to Outsider Art

For the first time, the Prinzhorn Collection has created a permanent exhibition to accompany the museum’s special exhibits. Entitled “The Prinzhorn Collection – From ‘Art of the Insane’ to Outsider Art”, the exhibit features around 120 works created in a psychiatric context from the mid-19th century until today, offering a glimpse of the 27,000 works in the collection.
